Why this is an estimate on Amazon

Amazon says its product star rating isn't a simple average. Its model looks at things like how recent a rating is and whether the buyer was verified. So treat the calculator as a close estimate. In plain average terms, a product at 4.1 with 120 ratings needs about 77 new 5-star ratings to show 4.5.

The ways Amazon allows

  • The Request a Review button in Seller Central. One request per order, sent between 5 and 30 days after delivery.
  • Amazon Vine, for brand registered sellers, where Amazon hands out units to its own reviewers.
  • A product and listing that match what shows up at the door. Most 1-star ratings are "not as described".

Paying, refunding or gifting for reviews breaks Amazon's rules and can get the listing or the account pulled.

Does one 1-star review hurt a lot on Amazon?

On a 4.5 product with 50 ratings, one 1-star drops it to 4.43. Winning that back takes 7 five-star ratings.

Do ratings without a written review count?

Yes. Star ratings with no text count toward the product's stars.

Can a seller remove an Amazon review?
