What Yelp counts
Yelp runs every review through its recommendation software. Reviews it doesn't recommend sit in a separate list at the bottom of your page and don't count toward your rating. So use your recommended review count in the calculator, not the total including the hidden ones.
The star picture on your page fills in half-star steps, so the calculator here works in halves. To show 4 stars from 3.5 with 60 reviews takes about 12 new 5-star reviews.
The rule most owners don't know
Yelp asks businesses not to ask customers for reviews at all. That's different from Google. Yelp can put a consumer alert on a page it thinks is buying or soliciting reviews, and that alert is far worse than a low rating. What you can do is tell people you're on Yelp, with a sticker or a "find us on Yelp" link, and answer every review you get, good or bad.
What actually moves a Yelp rating
- More customers who are already active on Yelp. Their reviews are the ones most likely to be recommended.
- Public replies to bad reviews that fix the problem. Some reviewers update their stars after.
- Reporting reviews that break Yelp's content rules. See removing bad reviews on Yelp.

Do not recommended reviews count on Yelp?
No. Only recommended reviews count toward your star rating and review count.
Can I ask customers for Yelp reviews?
Yelp's guidelines say no. Let people know you're on Yelp instead, and never offer anything for a review.
Why did my Yelp rating change when nobody left a review?
Yelp's software re-checks reviews over time. A review moving into or out of the recommended list changes your rating.
